Rugged Off Road 4x4 Trailers
Considerations, Options, and Decision

A few years back when we were considering an outback trailer the first thing we did was to shop around on the Internet to see what was out there. We saw many different manufacturers and models and discovered that there are so many we really had to stop and write down our priorities. Hopefully this page will guide you into a decision that is perfect for you. We've assembled some links to some of the different adventure trailer products that you might consider and even end up purchasing. We have no affiliation with the adventure trailer companies and this is not actually a review or a comparison site. This is simply what we considered and how we came to our decision to purchase and modify our Fleetwood Cobalt. You may arrive at a completely different trailer to suit your needs. This is our goal...to help you a better decision.

These were the basic steps we went through. You can see our modification process if you click on the Fleetwood Cobalt link.

1.) SHOP & GET EXCITED
2.) STOP & PRIORITIZE
(continues below videos)
3.) GO AND BUY
4.) MODIFY

Below are the 4 steps along with some links and videos to help you along the way.

1.) SHOP & GET EXCITED
4x4 trailer links

This should be the easy part and fun. Shop, look and get familiar with what is out there. During your looking (shopping) don't limit yourself to looking only at providers in your area. We looked overseas and saw what others had to offer and what they did in the way of modifications. This helped us in making our decision and mod plans.

The links at the right are by no means exhaustive. I'm sure there are other companies out there both here and abroad. This should give you a good start.

Below are only a few videos you might find helpful.

2.) STOP & PRIORITIZE
Our Trailer Priorities

After saturating ourselves with everything available option out there and looking at so many different concepts and models we realized that we had better make a priority list. What do we need in our trailer system? The list at the right was our main priorities. Yours will be different no doubt. But you get the idea.

Summary of Main Priorities;

Tow vehicle capacity
terrain use
price point along with availability.

Secondary considerations for use were;

Storage capacity for gear
electric brakes
a toilet
cooking system
sink
heater
sleep capacity was more than we needed

3.) GO AND BUY - Not much advice here, but this is an important step. We found a few models of the one we wanted being offered and made the purchase.

4.) MODIFY
Ahh yes. The job isn't over unless you've paid someone else to make any and all custom modifications that you may have considered. Pop up tents are notorious for having virtually no storage space to speak of. So we certainly had a number of modifications to make before we had what we considered a custom rig for the job at hand. At the right is a list of all the modifications we made to our Fleetwood Cobalt after we purchased it. Many of the mods can be seen and read about by clicking on the Fleetwood Trailer Modifications link. This will take you to the mod page. Also, from there you can link to the photo process with explanations of what we did to this trailer. READ ABOUT THE FLEETWOOD MODIFICATIONS

Our Mod List

A. Tow Vehicle Capability; We're towing using a 99' Jeep Wrangler 4.0. The manufacturer limits for towing were surprisingly low. We figured this was due mainly because of the short wheel base length during braking which makes the vehicle more likely to jack knife and not the actual towing power of the Jeep. This was the first priority and it limited us to what we could purchase. We started looking at full size pop ups. Don't just use the manufacturers curb weigh to figure your capacity. Remember, you will be loading the rig with water (8lbs. / gallon), propane, firewood, gasoline cans, food and equipment. We easily added another 1,000 lbs in supplies.

B. Terrain Use; We really wanted something more than what the durable and rugged 4x4 trailers had to offer. We don't do any rock crawling and we usually run our events in open desert areas. So we needed a trailer than was off road worthy, but we realized were would not be able to drag it down a Jeep trail necessarily. We compromised on a pop up (generally more spacious), but sacrificed just how far we could haul it into the badlands. If you are going to be traveling with a challenging group and pplan to navigate some difficult trails you will have to make some sacrifices in size. That is unless you're like the Gall Boys in the third video pulling full scale trailers over log bridges. I included this video to show you the wide spectrum of possibilities. Where you will be traveling to should play a big roll in your trailer decision.

B. Price Point; Not necessarily last, but along the way we were evaluating which trailers could do the job and still fir within our budget. Once we identified that the Fleetwood Cobalt had enough height profile, more than most pop ups tent trailers, we started shopping. We bought our rig slightly used. Previous owner had it for about a year. This knocked a lot off the retail price. Of course brand new is nice too if you can pay the ticket.
